Sister Tribes Academic Reward Scholarship

The Sister Tribes Academic Reward Scholarship (STAR Scholarship) was created to provide additional financial support for the higher education of students of the Four Sister Tribes (Salt River Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community, Ak-Chin Indian Community, Tohono O’odham Nation) who are attending school in the state of Arizona.  It is an academic scholarship designed to promote academic excellence among our students and must be earned.

The STAR Scholarship Committee will award scholarships to qualified students who apply and are currently Student1 enrolled in an accredited college, university, graduate school, including 2-year colleges, or vocational school in the State of Arizona based on Award Criteria and Financial Needs.  Awards are in the amount of $250, $500 and $1000 and will be awarded during the Annual WailaFest . Scholarships are for general purposes and are not expected to be directed for any specific use. This scholarship is presently available for download (STAR Scholarship). The number of scholarships awarded will depend on the funds available. The number of scholarships may vary from year to year, but Waila Festival, Inc. will work to increase that number going into the future. We are constantly working to increase our fundraising capabilities.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

Must be an enrolled member of one of the Four Sister Tribes (Salt River Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community, Ak-Chin Indian Community, Tohono O’odham Nation) or provide documented proof of at least 1/8 O’odham or Pii Paash Blood.

Must be a full-time student in an accredited college, university, graduate school, including 2-year colleges, or vocational schools (must submit current official or unofficial transcripts)

Must complete a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service at one or more of the Waila Festival, Inc. Events throughout the year following award of scholarship

Application must be completed, signed and submitted, postmarked by November 15th and it is recomended that you follow up by phone to verify receipt of your application by the Waila Festival, Inc. STAR Scholarship Committee at 602-380-7957 (Incomplete applications, faxed or e-mailed applications will not be considered)

Applicants are eligible for the following three types of scholarship awards:

Scholastic Achievement Awards ($1,000)

The student has a GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent

Honors Awards ($500)

The student has a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent

General Awards ($250)

Grades and academic performance will serve as indicators of potential; however, emphasis may be placed on the individual’s motivation, sincerity, and integrity, which can best be revealed through a personal interview and in the personal essay.  Financial need, community involvement, and leadership activities will also be considered.
